Thousands of New Zealanders are testing positive for Covid every day - and while that can be daunting for their health, for many, the fears are much greater.

Dave Letele runs Buttabean Motivation - a community fitness group which has turned into an Auckland wide foodbank. Demand for their kai has skyrocketed over the past couple of weeks as Omicron surges - he estimates they are doing quadruple what they usually would. Click here RNZ news

Cook Islands records spike in COVID cases with 15 new infections

William Hewett 01/03/2022...The Cook Islands has announced a spike in COVID cases with 15 new infections taking the total to 25 in the island nation. The Health Ministry, Te Marae Ora (TMO), said on Tuesday (NZ time) 18 close contacts have tested positive for COVID

TMO said of the 25 cases, 21 are currently in isolation while the rest have completed their isolation periods and been released, having been symptom-free for the last 72 hours of their isolation. All 25 cases are vaccinated with many experiencing mild COVID symptoms and none have required hospital treatment so far.

TMO announced they will be reducing isolation periods because of the shorter incubation period of Omicron and to better align the Cook Islands with current practice in New Zealand. While household contacts – those who live in the same household as a positive case – will still be required to quarantine for 10 days, Click here News-hub

New auditioning process for Southland Girls' High School's Femme choir

Jamie Searle 14:48, Feb 25 2022 The selection process for the Southland Girls’ High School’s Femme choir looks a little different this year with auditions being held outside with face mask wearing being optional.

Under Covid-19 regulations students have auditioned on their own outside on school grounds, with a covered in area available when it rained. The second and final part of auditioning was held in fine weather on Thursday. Students auditioning also joined some of last year’s Femme singers for a rehearsal with the two-metre social distancing rule in place.

Because Femme singers missed out on competing at The Big Sing National Finale in Christchurch in August through it being cancelled, the decision was made to keep them in the choir this year, if they wanted to. Click here Stuff-news

Russian space supremo says ISS could be in danger, suggests Biden has Alzheimer's

Mike Kilpatrick 28/02/2022..The International Space Station (ISS) could be in danger from sanctions imposed on Russia, the head of the country's space agency has warned.

Roscosmos director general Dimitry Rogozin also suggested that President Joe Biden was suffering from Alzheimer's and told the US not to "behave like an irresponsible gamer" in a bizarre Twitter thread.

After saying the US had already sanctioned Russia's space program by blocking access to radiation-resistant microelectronics, Rogozin wondered if Biden was willing to destroy the cooperation between the two countries on the ISS. That could be potentially dangerous as the Russian segment of the ISS looks after the guidance, navigation and control for the whole station, the European Space Agency has said. Click here

Phoebe Weston 01/03/2022...People working for the government’s conservation watchdog are so underpaid that it is threatening the UK’s ability to reach net-zero pledges, a trade union report warns.

Salaries of those working for the government agency Natural England have fallen by 20% in real terms over the last decade, with starting pay thousands of pounds lower than private and charity-sector equivalents, according to the Prospect union’s Natural England 2022 report.

Low pay and rising levels stress means the agency is struggling to fulfil its duties of protecting the natural environment, according to the report. Poor pay remains a huge and worsening risk to Natural England and the work it does,” it says. “Comprehensive reform, supported with true additional funding, is urgently required..  Click here The Guardian

Grant Chapman 01/03/2022..Forwards Tom Vodanovich and Rob Loe have powered the Tall Blacks to a second win over India, completing World Cup qualifying group play unbeaten at Manilla.

India trailled just 24-20 after the opening quarter, but went scoreless for seven minutes of the second, as the Tall Blacks unleashed 23 unanswered points to take full control of the contest.

Without many of his frontline players for this stage of World Cup qualifying, coach Pero Cameron again relied heavily on players with international experience, led by double doubles from Vodanovich (20 points/10 rebounds) and Loe (18/10). New Zealand outrebounded their opponents 48-29, including 20 offensive boards, while converting 11 three-pointers, Click here News-hub

Creative genius Anonymouz on upcoming project ‘Re-Sample Tatau’

by Hanalei Foliaki...FEBRUARY 12, 2022 In 2014 producer and artist Faiumu Matthew Salapu – also known as Anonymouz – was doing sound design work at Radio 531PI and NiuFM when he decided he needed the  tapping sound of Samoan tatau-making for one of his jingles.

“The Aganu’u Fa’a Samoa 101 lot said, ‘hey, McAuley and De La Selle have got something on at MIT, a live session, you might want to go along to that and record the tapping’,” he says.

Anonymouz says he went along and, as the session concluded, the Tufuga (traditional Samoan tattoo artist) questioned him about whether he carried the Pe’a, to which he responded, “no. He was like [to me], ‘I respect that people in the arts industry will respect your work but to you it’s just a sound, to us it’s a feeling’ and that cut me to my core,” he says. Gillian Bonnett 01/03/2022..An estimated 100,000 migrants can apply for fast-tracked residence from today - though IT problems have stopped some being able to. House-building costs are more than three times what they could be, ComCom told

Tom Pullar-Strecker 15:42, Mar 01 2022 Arguments over the cost of building new homes have begun in earnest with competition advocate Tex Edwards telling the Commerce Commission in a submission that massive economies are possible.

The watchdog is currently carrying out a market study into the building materials industry after voicing concern that there is a narrow choice of suppliers, some of which may be using “loyalty payments and rebates” to restrict competition for some key products.

Edwards said in a Monopoly Watch submission that its research indicated the cost of building “entry level social housing” ran to about $3800 per square metre in New Zealand, but should be about $1200/square-metre according to international best practice. A “large scalable player” established to build about 3000 to 5000 properties a year could roll-back , Click here Stuff-news
